Back in 1995, Andrew Madigan was pursuing a PhD in American literature in St. Louis, Missouri, when he was cast, quite inadvertently, as the stand-in for actor Bill Murray in the film Larger than Life.

In a recent essay appearing in Salon, Andrew writes humorously about the awkwardness of his stand-in experience on that film — from his “snuff film”-esque audition, to his interactions his first-team counterpart Murray, to his being chased repeatedly down an alleyway by an elephant.

Andrew also writes about the hierarchical nature of film jobs, as well as some of the tasks required of a stand-in.
