In the fall of 2012, Audrey Wagner was a senior acting major at Oklahoma City University, preparing to do a play she was just cast in at her college. It was around this time that she got called to stand in for actor Juliette Lewis on the film August: Osage County — a film that in 2014 would garner a number of acting award nominations.
Seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Audrey said to Gary DeMuth for an article in the Salina Journal, “Watching Meryl Streep work would be the best acting lesson I would ever have.” Over the next several months, Audrey worked about three times per week as a stand-in for Juliette Lewis and occasionally also as her photo double, working around other actors like Meryl Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, and Julia Roberts — not to mention producer George Clooney.
Standing in can be a wonderful tool for learning about not only acting, but also how films and television shows are made. No doubt the experience was a memorable one for Audrey. Having since moving to New Orleans after college to develop her acting career, Audrey said of her experience standing in on August: Osage County, “I probably should quit while I’m on top … I’m absolutely spoiled now.”
