Freelance writer Sean Peters recently stood in for actor Ewan McGregor on the film Miles Ahead, and he turned his experience into a comical essay published recently in CityBeat.
A Cincinnati local, Sean landed his stand-in gig after responding to a posting on Craigslist looking for extras for the film. Referring to himself as “a celebrity-shaped prop,” he also ended up working as a photo double for McGregor — more accurately, McGregor’s “shadow double.” Sean joked “[l]ast month I couldn’t get a dishwashing job at Dewey’s Pizza” but now McGregor might owe him a favor for this on-camera work for the celebrity.
Sean’s essay details some of his responsibilities on the job, which sound typical of many stand-in jobs. From long hours to utility stand-in work, he noted the professionalism and dedication the cast and crew exhibited on the project. Sean even ended up with some — albeit relatively anonymous — publicity for his work as McGregor’s stand-in: A photo in which he appeared with McGregor appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer and was picked up by USA Today.
