In 2013, Canadian actors Jason Cermak and Luigi Riscaldino had the good fortune of landing work as stand-ins on the film Interstellar, which was just released today. For the outer space film, Jason stood in for Matthew McConaughey and Luigi stood in for Michael Caine.
Metro Canada interviewed the stand-ins for a recent article. Jason worked on the film for a month and a half in Longview, Alberta. Luigi worked two days. Both were obviously impressed by working under director Christopher Nolan, not to mention working with the all-star cast.
Perhaps unusually, the director played an integral part in their landing the stand-in jobs. Said Luigi, “[It] actually came down to where [Nolan] would select who he wanted as stand-ins, that’s not something directors typically bother with.”
Jason described his job on the Interstellar set. “I’m getting paid to basically sit-in and get an education on how the best in the world do this.” But there were also challenges. Jason described the “grueling conditions,” not to mention the etiquette he needed to strictly observe while on set and the need to resist temptation to talk to his first-team counterpart.
Eventually, Jason got to talk to McConaughey — as well as see a screening of his film Dallas Buyers Club, for which he would go on to win an Oscar for Best Actor.
