It isn’t often when stand-ins come up in the news, and it’s even less often when stand-ins from iconic films of the past come up in the news. However, recently, The Post-Standard ran an article about Heidi Cross and Kate Huddleston, two sisters who were young stand-ins on the 1965 film The Sound of Music.
Back in 1964 in Salzburg, Austria, Heidi and Kate were only 12 and 13 when they stood in for Louisa and Brigitta Von Trapp, characters played by Heather Menzies and Angela Cartwright. They were transplants from New York City who moved to Austria for their father’s work.
Their work as stand-ins then does not sound much different than the work of stand-ins today: they were primarily there for lighting shots. They also endured early morning van rides to set and even some overnight shoots, shooting all day for over three summer months. They made “the equivalent of $4 a day.”
They also worked as photo doubles — or perhaps even stunt doubles — on the film, appearing on camera in the car chase.
Both live in the Syracuse, New York, area, and Kate continued on to become an award-winning local actor.
