Here’s a quick tip for those days when you’re standing in on a set and you don’t know any of the actors.

How to Figure out Who Your Actor Is

When you checked in, you were likely told you were standing in for a number. The callsheet on the front of your sides shows the cast list, and beside each actor’s name is a number. Match your number to the actor’s name and you’ve found out for whom you’re standing in.

If you don’t recognize the name of the actor, it would help you a lot to do an internet search of the actor’s name before marking rehearsal is called.

Why?

Say that the scene you’re standing in in has a lot of characters in it. Also say that the scene is fairly complicated to pull off. In such a case, it wouldn’t be a surprise to find out that the ADs are busy figuring out logistics and might not be available to you.

If, say, you google the actor’s name in advance of marking rehearsal, likely some photos will show up. You’ll recognize the actor on set without taking anyone’s attention off their jobs!
